Product Description
Main products
Coupling refers to a device that connects 2 shafts or shafts and rotating parts, rotates together during the transmission of motion and power, and does not disengage under normal conditions. Sometimes it is also used as a safety device to prevent the connected parts from bearing excessive load, which plays the role of overload protection.
Couplings can be divided into rigid couplings and flexible couplings.
Rigid couplings do not have buffering property and the ability to compensate the relative displacement of 2 axes. It is required that the 2 axes be strictly aligned. However, such couplings are simple in structure, low in manufacturing cost, convenient in assembly and disassembly, and maintenance, which can ensure that the 2 axes are relatively neutral, have large transmission torque, and are widely used. Commonly used are flange coupling, sleeve coupling and jacket coupling.
Flexible coupling can also be divided into flexible coupling without elastic element and flexible coupling with elastic element. The former type only has the ability to compensate the relative displacement of 2 axes, but cannot cushion and reduce vibration. Common types include slider coupling, gear coupling, universal coupling and chain coupling; The latter type contains elastic elements. In addition to the ability to compensate the relative displacement of 2 axes, it also has the functions of buffering and vibration reduction. However, due to the strength of elastic elements, the transmitted torque is generally inferior to that of flexible couplings without elastic elements. Common types include elastic sleeve pin couplings, elastic pin couplings, quincunx couplings, tire type couplings, serpentine spring couplings, spring couplings, etc
Coupling performance
1) Mobility. The movability of the coupling refers to the ability to compensate the relative displacement of 2 rotating components. Factors such as manufacturing and installation errors between connected components, temperature changes during operation and deformation under load all put CHINAMFG requirements for mobility. The movable performance compensates or alleviates the additional load between shafts, bearings, couplings and other components caused by the relative displacement between rotating components.
(2) Buffering. For the occasions where the load is often started or the working load changes, the coupling shall be equipped with elastic elements that play the role of cushioning and vibration reduction to protect the prime mover and the working machine from little or no damage.
(3) Safe, reliable, with sufficient strength and service life.
(4) Simple structure, easy to assemble, disassemble and maintain.
How to select the appropriate coupling type
The following items should be considered when selecting the coupling type.
1. The size and nature of the required transmission torque, the requirements for buffering and damping functions, and whether resonance may occur.
2. The relative displacement of the axes of the 2 shafts is caused by manufacturing and assembly errors, shaft load and thermal expansion deformation, and relative movement between components.
3. Permissible overall dimensions and installation methods, and necessary operating space for assembly, adjustment and maintenance. For large couplings, they should be able to be disassembled without axial movement of the shaft.
In addition, the working environment, service life, lubrication, sealing, economy and other conditions should also be considered, and a suitable coupling type should be selected by referring to the characteristics of various couplings.

Using Jaw Couplings in Precision Motion Control Systems
Jaw couplings are versatile mechanical couplings commonly used in various industrial applications for transmitting torque between two shafts. While they offer many benefits such as simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and ease of installation, they may not be the best choice for precision motion control systems that require extremely accurate and repeatable positioning. The following factors should be considered when using jaw couplings in precision motion control systems:
- Backlash: Jaw couplings typically have some degree of backlash due to the clearance between the jaws and the spacers. This can introduce positional errors and limit the ability to achieve precise movements, especially in systems that require bidirectional positioning.
- Angular and Parallel Misalignment: While jaw couplings can accommodate some degree of misalignment, precision motion control systems often require tight tolerances and minimal misalignment to achieve accurate positioning. In such cases, more rigid and flexible couplings, such as servo couplings or beam couplings, may be preferred.
- Torsional Stiffness: In precision motion control, minimizing torsional wind-up and maintaining torsional stiffness is essential for precise and responsive movements. Jaw couplings may not provide the required level of torsional stiffness needed for high-performance motion control applications.
- Resonance and Vibration: In precision motion systems, avoiding resonance and minimizing vibration is crucial for stability and accuracy. The damping characteristics of jaw couplings may not be sufficient to suppress vibrations and resonant frequencies, which can adversely affect performance.
While jaw couplings are widely used in general industrial applications, precision motion control systems often demand more specialized and precise coupling solutions. Some alternatives that are better suited for precision motion control applications include servo couplings, beam couplings, and disc couplings. These couplings offer higher torsional stiffness, lower backlash, and better overall performance for demanding motion control requirements.
When selecting a coupling for precision motion control, it is essential to consider the specific requirements of the application, including torque, speed, misalignment, and stiffness, to ensure the chosen coupling can meet the precision and performance demands of the system.
Can jaw couplings be used in applications with high shock and impact loads?
Yes, jaw couplings can be used in applications with high shock and impact loads, but their suitability depends on the specific design and construction of the coupling as well as the magnitude and frequency of the shock and impact loads. Jaw couplings are known for their ability to handle certain levels of shock and vibration due to the presence of the elastomer spider, which acts as a damping element to absorb and dissipate vibrations. However, there are some important considerations to take into account when using jaw couplings in high shock and impact load applications:
- Coupling Material: The choice of coupling material is crucial in applications with high shock and impact loads. Couplings made from robust materials, such as steel or alloy, provide better resistance to deformation and can handle higher impact forces compared to couplings made from less sturdy materials.
- Elastomer Spider: The elastomer spider is the central element of the jaw coupling and is responsible for absorbing shocks and vibrations. It is essential to select an elastomer spider with the appropriate hardness and resilience for the specific application. Harder elastomers can withstand higher loads but may transmit more vibration, while softer elastomers offer better shock absorption but have lower torque capacity. Choosing the right elastomer hardness is a trade-off between shock absorption and torque transmission requirements.
- Operating Conditions: Consider the operating conditions, such as the frequency and magnitude of shock and impact loads, when selecting a jaw coupling. For applications with intermittent or occasional shock loads, standard jaw couplings with moderate shock absorption capabilities may suffice. However, for continuous or severe shock loads, specialized high-torque jaw couplings with enhanced shock absorption properties might be more suitable.
- Regular Maintenance: In high shock and impact load applications, it is crucial to perform regular maintenance and inspections to identify any signs of wear, fatigue, or damage to the coupling components. Regular maintenance ensures that the coupling remains in good working condition and minimizes the risk of unexpected failures due to excessive loading.
- Consider Alternative Couplings: While jaw couplings can handle certain levels of shock and impact loads, some applications with exceptionally high loads may require more specialized couplings, such as grid couplings, gear couplings, or disc couplings. These couplings are designed explicitly for heavy-duty applications with high shock and impact loads and can offer superior performance and reliability under such conditions.
In conclusion, jaw couplings can be used in applications with high shock and impact loads, but the specific coupling design, material, elastomer hardness, and operating conditions must be carefully considered. Proper selection, installation, and maintenance of the coupling are essential to ensure reliable performance and longevity in challenging operating environments with significant shock and impact loads.
Limitations and Disadvantages of Using Jaw Couplings
While jaw couplings offer several advantages, they also have some limitations and disadvantages that should be considered when selecting them for specific applications:
- Angular Misalignment: Jaw couplings are sensitive to angular misalignment, and excessive misalignment can lead to increased wear and reduced service life.
- Radial Misalignment: Similar to angular misalignment, radial misalignment should be kept within acceptable limits to prevent premature wear.
- Temperature Limitations: The operating temperature range of jaw couplings may be limited by the material used. For high-temperature applications, other coupling types may be more suitable.
- Shock Load Absorption: While jaw couplings can handle moderate shock loads, they may not be ideal for applications with severe shock loads, which can lead to increased stress and failure.
- Torsional Stiffness: Jaw couplings have a certain level of torsional stiffness, which means they may not provide the same level of vibration isolation as other coupling types.
- Backlash: Jaw couplings can have some degree of backlash due to their elastomeric element, which may not be desirable in precision positioning applications.
- Speed Limitations: High-speed applications may require careful consideration of the jaw coupling's design and material selection to avoid issues related to centrifugal forces.
Despite these limitations, jaw couplings remain a popular choice in many applications due to their ease of installation, simple design, and cost-effectiveness. Proper selection, installation, and maintenance can help mitigate some of these limitations and ensure optimal performance and reliability of the jaw coupling.
